RightOffs for Android: Your Books, In Your Pocket

Expenses do not happen at a desk. They happen in a parking garage, at a hardware store counter, in an airport. The RightOffs Android app is now on Google Play, so the work of sorting them can happen in the same place.

The receipt problem is not really a receipt problem. It is a location problem.

You buy a drill bit at a hardware store on the way to a job. You pay for parking at a client's building. You grab a coffee before a meeting that is genuinely a business meeting. Every one of those is a deduction, and every one of them happens while you are standing up, holding a phone, somewhere that is not your desk.

The sorting, meanwhile, has historically happened at the desk. Weeks later. From a bank statement, on a laptop, trying to remember whether the $47 at a hardware store in March was for a job or for the fence at home.

That gap is where deductions go to die. Not because anyone is careless, but because memory decays and receipts fade, and the moment you actually knew the answer has passed.

The RightOffs Android app is now live on Google Play. It exists to close that gap: to let the sorting happen where the spending happens.

What you can actually do in it

This is not a stripped-down companion that shows you a read-only balance. The daily work of keeping clean books is all there:

  • Classify transactions as business or personal, and assign a category, one at a time or in bulk. This is the core loop, and it is the thing that is genuinely better on a phone — it is a series of small decisions, which is exactly the kind of task that fits into four spare minutes in a waiting room.
  • Set rules that remember your decisions. Classify a merchant once and choose to remember it, and future transactions from that merchant sort themselves on every sync. Most people spend with a small, repeating set of vendors, so this is where the bulk of the work disappears.
  • Add manual transactions for cash, or for anything that never touched a connected account.
  • Capture receipts on the spot. Photograph a receipt while you are still standing at the counter and attach it to the transaction it belongs to, instead of hoping the paper survives your glovebox until April.
  • Connect and manage bank accounts through Plaid, and trigger a sync when you want fresh transactions.
  • Pull up your summaries, reports, and exports — the same CPA-ready numbers as the web, on the device you already have with you.

Your businesses, classes, categories, notifications, and billing all carry over, because they are the same account. There is no mobile version of your data.

Why a phone matters for this specific problem

Plenty of finance tools ship a phone app because everything ships a phone app. For expense tracking on a 1099 income, there is a sharper reason.

Deductions are lost to delay, not to ignorance. Almost nobody misses the home office deduction because they have never heard of it. They miss the $23 of parking, the domain renewal, the one-off contractor payment — small amounts, individually forgettable, collectively significant. Those get missed because the moment of clarity ("this is for the Peterson job") and the moment of recording (April, statement, laptop) are months apart.

That gap costs more than people assume, because your net profit drives both income tax and self-employment tax. A missed deduction is not just your marginal rate — it is another 15.3% on top of it.

Most people run one card for everything. The advice to keep a separate business account is good, and it is widely ignored, which means the average transaction list is a mix of business and personal spending that only you can untangle — and only while you still remember. We wrote about how to sort a mixed account without starting over; doing it on your phone, as it happens, is the version that requires no untangling at all.

Receipts are physical objects that get destroyed. Thermal paper fades, glovebox paper gets wet, wallet paper gets thrown out. The IRS asks for the amount, date, vendor, and business purpose — see our receipt management guide for what actually has to be kept. A photo taken at the counter satisfies that. A photo you meant to take does not.

What is honestly not there yet

A launch post that only lists wins is not much use, so:

  • Editing offline is not supported. The app needs a connection, and it pauses requests when you lose one rather than failing them silently. If you are out of signal, take the photo now and record it later.
  • Automatic receipt-to-transaction matching is still in beta. Attaching a receipt to a transaction works for everyone. Having the app find the matching transaction for you is currently limited to beta testers while we tune it — matching on amount, merchant, and date is easy to get slightly wrong, and slightly wrong is worse than manual.
  • There is no iPhone app yet. It is in development. Until then, RightOffs works in Safari and can be added to your home screen.

Getting started takes about a minute

  1. Install from Google Play — search "RightOffs" or use rightoffs.com/download.
  2. Sign in with your existing account, by email or with Google.
  3. Your data is already there. Nothing to import, nothing to set up twice.

If you do not have an account yet, you can start a free trial on the web or straight from the app.

The pitch is not that mobile is a better place to do bookkeeping than a desktop. It is that the desk is the wrong place to capture anything, and capture is the part everyone loses. Sort it where it happens, and April stops being an archaeology project.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the RightOffs Android app free?

The app itself is free to download from Google Play, and the Free plan works on it: manual transaction entry, basic P&L reports, and single-business tracking. Automatic bank sync, AI categorization, and multiple bank connections are Pro features, priced the same as on the web at $15/month or $150/year. There is nothing extra to buy for mobile access — your existing plan already covers it.

Do I need a separate account for the mobile app?

No. Sign in with the same email and password, or the same Google account, that you use on rightoffs.com. There is no separate signup, no export or import step, and no data migration. Your transactions, categories, classification rules, businesses, and receipts are the same records on both — a change you make on your phone is on the web before you get back to your laptop.

Does the app work without an internet connection?

Not for making changes. RightOffs needs a connection to read and write your data, and the app deliberately pauses network requests when it detects that you are offline rather than failing them one by one and leaving you unsure what saved. When the connection returns, it resumes. If you are somewhere with no signal, take the receipt photo with your camera and attach it later, or jot the amount and enter it as a manual transaction when you are back online. Offline editing is on our roadmap, not in the app today.

Is my bank data safe in the mobile app?

Bank connections go through Plaid, the same provider the web app uses. RightOffs never sees or stores your online banking username and password — you enter those inside Plaid, and we receive only a token that lets us read transactions. All traffic is over HTTPS, sign-in is handled by Firebase Authentication, and the app supports the same account protections as the web. You can disconnect any bank, export your data, or delete your account entirely from inside the app under Settings, Privacy and Data.

When is the iPhone app coming out?

An iPhone app is in active development and we have not committed to a public date, because App Store review timing is not something we control. In the meantime RightOffs runs in Safari and can be added to your iPhone home screen, where it opens full screen and behaves much like an app. Nothing you do there needs redoing when the native app arrives, since it is the same account and the same data.

Where can I download the RightOffs Android app?

Search for "RightOffs" on Google Play, or go to rightoffs.com/download, which links straight to the listing and always points at the current version. The package name is com.rightoffs.app. Android is available now; iPhone is in development.
